Estimated total
$2,480
Per night
$620

Money-saving swaps that don't ruin the trip

Lodging
Hotel: $150-300/night

Convenient but expensive. Eating out every meal because there's no kitchen.

Vacation rental: $100-200/night

Kitchen for breakfast and lunch. More space. Vacation rentals save families 20-40% vs. hotels when you factor in meals Source: AirDNA, 2025 .

Food
All restaurant meals: $60-120/day

Three restaurant meals a day for a family of 4 adds up fast.

Cook 2, eat out 1: $30-50/day

Breakfast and lunch from the grocery store or rental kitchen. One nice dinner out. Eating in saves roughly 3x per meal vs. eating out Source: USDA ERS, 2025 . Save restaurant meals for the experience, not the calories.

Activities
Paid attractions daily: $80-200+/day

Theme parks, boat tours, museums with tickets for every family member.

Alternate paid + free: $30-80/day

One paid activity. One free day (beach, hiking, park, downtown exploring). Kids don't need stimulation every hour. Some of the best vacation memories are unstructured. Families who mix paid and free activities report equal satisfaction at 40% lower cost Source: AAA Travel Survey, 2024 .

Travel
Flying peak season: $300-600/person

Summer flights for a family of 4 can be $1,200-2,400 round trip.

Drive under 6 hours: $50-120 total

AAA estimates driving costs $0.22/mile Source: AAA Gas Cost Calculator, 2025 for a mid-size SUV. A 300-mile road trip: $66 in gas. That's $66 vs. $1,500+ in flights. Destinations within 5-6 hours of home are the budget sweet spot for families.

How to save for the trip

Don't put a vacation on a credit card. 35% of Americans go into debt for vacation, paying an average of $1,400 in interest before it's paid off Source: LendingTree, 2024 . That $2,500 trip becomes a $3,900 trip.

Instead: divide the estimated total by the number of months until the trip. Set up an automatic transfer to a separate savings account (a "vacation fund"). If the trip costs $2,500 and it's 5 months away, that's $500/month. If that's too much, either extend the timeline or reduce the trip scope.

Use our budget template to find the monthly vacation savings amount that works. Even $150/month gives you $1,800/year for travel. That's a solid road trip every summer and a weekend getaway in the off-season.

The stuff that saves money and sanity

Pack snacks and drinks for the car/plane. Airport food for a family of 4: $40-60. A bag of snacks from home: $8. This alone saves $100+ on a round trip.

Download entertainment before you leave. Movies, shows, audiobooks, and games downloaded on tablets. No buying in-flight WiFi. No "I'm bored" stops at expensive tourist traps.

Travel Tuesday-Thursday when possible. Hotels are 15-30% cheaper on weeknights vs. weekends Source: Hopper Travel Data, 2025 . Flights are cheapest on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If your schedule allows it, shift your travel days.

Use the grocery store, not the gift shop. Souvenirs from the gift shop: $15 each. Same magnet or keychain on Amazon later: $5. Or skip souvenirs entirely and let the photos be the memory. Your kids won't remember the $12 snow globe. They'll remember the sandcastle.
